Srinagar, October 17 (KIP)-A two-day training workshop on the theme “Beyond Barriers: Reading and Learning with Assistive Tools and Technologies” concluded at the Ibn Khaldun Auditorium, University of Kashmir. The concluding day featured technical sessions facilitated by experienced resource persons including Mr. Umar from Saksham, Dr. Aafiya from the Composite Regional Centre for Persons with Disabilities, Javed Ahmad Tak, Disability Rights Activist and founder of Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education Bijbehara, Ms. Iqra Wali from Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS), Mr. Mohammad Hanif Malik from VMS Bemina, and moderators Mohammad Sultan and Mohammad Shaheel.
During the workshop, participants received hands-on training on using Non-Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) and its advanced add-ons. The sessions covered practical demonstrations of assistive applications such as “Google Lookout” and “MANI” — a mobile app enabling visually impaired persons to identify Indian currency notes. Participants also explored tools that detect human presence in a room and recognize colors to enhance virtual sensory experiences for blind users.
In her concluding remarks, Dr. Aafiya emphasized that technology should be viewed as a companion aiding independence rather than a tool for complete dependence.
Javed Ahmad Tak commended the University of Kashmir for organizing progressive programs on mobility and assistive technology. He, however, urged for judicious use of such technologies, cautioning against overuse that could harm sensory or postural health. He highlighted that prolonged exposure to talking software may affect hearing among visually impaired users, while consistent screen use among those with hearing impairments could lead to eye strain and posture deformities.
In the post-lunch session, Professor Dr. Pervez Ahmad, Dean Students’ Welfare, accompanied by Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Lone, Director Allama Iqbal Library, distributed certificates of participation among 200 participants and eight resource persons.
The event concluded with a vibrant cultural performance by students with disabilities from the Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education, whose engaging presentation left the audience rejuvenated. The formal proceedings ended with a vote of thanks presented by Mohammad Shaheel coordinator Enabling unit University of Kashmir
