GoI announces judicial inquiry by SC judge into the 24th September incident in Leh

New Delhi/Leh, October 17 (KIP)-Ministry Of Home Affairs notifies judicial inquiry by retired supreme court judge to inquire into the 24th September incident in Leh

On 24.09.2025, a serious law and order situation was created in Leh town resulting in police action leading to the unfortunate death of four individuals.

In order to ensure an impartial inquiry the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, today, notified a Judicial Inquiry to be conducted by Hon’ble Dr. Justice B. S. Chauhan (Former Judge, Hon’ble Supreme Court of India) into the circumstances leading to the serious law and order situation, the police action and the resultant unfortunate death of the four individuals.


The Government has always been open for dialogue at any time and would continue to welcome the discussion with Apex Body Leh (ABL) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) through the High Powered Committee on Ladakh or any such platform.

The Government is confident that continuous dialogue would yield the desired results in near future and Government stands committed to the aspirations of the people of Ladakh.


Meanwhile the Chief Secretary, while addressing a press conference today stated that five patients are currently admitted to the hospital as of today.

He described the incident as “unfortunate,” noting that the peaceful protest had taken a violent turn. Responding to public demand for accountability, the Government of India has announced that a judicial inquiry will be conducted. The inquiry will be headed by Justice B.S. Chauhan and assisted by an IAS officer. The date for the High-Powered Committee meeting will be announced shortly.

The administration, he added, is making all possible efforts to restore normalcy in the region following the incident.

Acknowledging the government’s positive steps, the Chief Secretary appealed to the public to maintain peace, refrain from gatherings and rallies, and help ensure harmony and stability in Ladakh.
