Kathua Campus, University of Jammu organizes Expert Talk on Positive Mental Health

Jammu, November 19 (KIP)-Department of Computer Science & IT, Kathua Campus, University of Jammu organized an expert talk on “Positive Mental Health” to promote psychological well-being among students and faculty. Dr. Rajesh Kumar Chandel, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua was the resource person for the session.
Dr. Chandel explained that mental health is more than the absence of illness, stressing that even individuals with mental health conditions can lead meaningful and fulfilling lives. He discussed key components of positive mental health such as positive emotions, self-esteem, sense of control, resilience, and the ability to cope with stress.
He also elaborated on the well-being model comprising Positive Emotion, Engagement, Meaning, Positive Relationships, and Accomplishment. He encouraged participants to identify and use their signature strengths in work, relationships, and leisure activities. Dr. Chandel recommended purposeful activities such as sports, music, dance, art, gardening, baking, spiritual practices, and meaningful social interactions to enhance engagement and overall well-being.
In his message, Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Rector, Kathua Campus, University of Jammu appreciated the initiative and highlighted the importance of nurturing resilience, self-awareness, and positive habits among students. He emphasized that fostering positive mental health is essential for creating a supportive learning environment. Prof. Jasrotia also encouraged the faculty to continue organizing such awareness programmes to empower students both academically and emotionally.
Earlier, Dr. Sourabh Shastri, In-Charge Head, Computer Science Department, welcomed the resource person and emphasized the need for such sessions in managing rising stress among youth.
Dr. Bharti Rana coordinated the whole programme and Ms. Princee Verma delivered vote of thanks. Lt. Amit Sharma, Dr. Pranav Ratta, Dr. Ritu Sharma, Dr. Surekha Phakwrya, Dr. Nomita Sharma, Er. Sourav Gupta, Er. Rakshit Khajuria, Er. Puneet Kour, and Er. Jeewan Jot attended the event.
