World Soil Day Celebrated at University of Ladakh’s Stakna Campus

Leh, December 05 (KIP)- The School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Stakna, Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, celebrated World Soil Day on 5th December 2025 with great enthusiasm. The event brought together Assistant Professors, project staff, non-teaching staff, and B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture students.
The programme was moderated by Dr. Kunzang Lamo, Assistant Professor (Fruit Science). The celebration commenced with an insightful briefing on the history and significance of World Soil Day, delivered by Dr. Padma Angmo, Assistant Professor (Soil Science). She highlighted the contributions of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, whose advocacy for soil conservation led to the global recognition of this day. Dr. Angmo also explained this year’s theme, “Healthy Soil for Healthy Cities.”
As part of the event, a quiz competition was organized featuring three teams-Team Dokuchaev, Team Jenny, and Team Liebig. The jury members for the quiz were Dr. Kunzes Angmo (Junior Scientist cum Assistant Professor) and Dr. Sonam Spaldon (Junior Scientist cum Assistant Professor). The competition included MCQ and rapid-fire rounds, in which students participated with great enthusiasm. Team Jenny emerged as the winner, securing first place with 11 points. Prizes were awarded to the winners and participants by Prof. D. Namgyal.
In his address, Prof. D. Namgyal emphasized the significance of soil health and various methods of soil conservation. He encouraged students to expand their general knowledge beyond academic textbooks and elaborated on the crucial role and functions of soil in sustaining agriculture and the environment.
The celebration concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Stanzin Yangsdon, Assistant Professor (Extension Education).
