Commissioner R&R reviews ongoing development works in migrant camps

Jammu, January 10 (KIP)- A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Arvind Karwani, Commissioner Relief and Rehabilitation (M), J&K to review the ongoing development works in the migrant camps at Jammu, requirement of works/projects in the migrant camps, including the migrant schools, dispensaries, community halls etc and to take appraisal of the budgetary provisions made by the different Government departments for the financial year 2026-27.

The progress of integration of migrant ration cards into the NFSA database and extension of social sector schemes to the eligible migrant beneficiaries was also reviewed.

Vijay Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner Relief, Kailash Devi, Assistant Commissioner Relief, Sanjeev Kumar Assistant Commissioner Relief, Tej Krishan, Assistant Commissioner Relief and all Tehsildars/Camp Commandants of the Relief Organization were present in the meeting. Senior officers from various Government Departments like Health, PWD(R&B), Jal Shakti, JPDCL, H&UDD, UEED, FCS& CA Department, Social Welfare Department, Employment Department, JAKEDA, JAKeGA, Floriculture and Principals of Migrant Schools and In-charge Sub-District Hospital Jagti etc also attended the meeting.

At the outset, the Relief & Rehabilitation Commissioner while reviewing the status of basic amenities like safe drinking water, power supply and sanitation, impressed upon the concerned officers to ensure that the uninterrupted safe potable drinking water supply is provided to the residents of migrant camps.

Regarding some cases of gastroenteritis reported in Migrant Camp Jagti recently, the officers of Jal Shakti and Health Department apprised that all possible steps are being taken to provide safe drinking water and health cover. It was also apprised that initial water samples collected have revealed water quality as satisfactory.

The Health Department was asked to circulate an advisory for the residents of the migrant camps regarding the preventive measures.

The Executive Engineer PW(R&B) Department apprised about the progress of works going on in the migrant camps viz Migrant Camp Jagti, Migrant Camp Nagrota, Migrant Camp Muthi & Buta Nagar and Migrant Camp Purkhoo. He was directed to expedite the completion of repair and renovation works for which approval stands accorded. PW(R&B) authorities were also directed to expedite submission of a detailed project report for the major works identified for the financial year 2026-27.

The Executive Engineer assured timely completion of ongoing works and close supervision of the quality of works being executed. The JAKEDA apprised that another 150 street lights will be installed within a month’s time at different locations in the migrant camps.

Deputy Commissioner Relief and Assistant Commissioners Relief were asked to ensure weekly visits in the camps assigned to them as per the duty roster and take stock of all development works/problems of migrants, including grievances related to immovable properties in Kashmir Valley. The Health Department was asked to deploy doctors on rotation basis to the migrant camp and make the dispensary fully functional with an ambulance.

Dr Karwani also reviewed the outcome of a series of outreach camps conducted recently by the Relief Organization for identification of potential beneficiaries of various social sector schemes and self employment schemes and further asked the concerned departments to give wide awareness about the schemes in the migrant camps and arrange more outreach programmes.

The Department of Youth Services & Sports was asked to develop a proposal for the maintenance of open spaces/playground at Migrant Camp Nagrota. The Department of Floriculture, Gardens & Parks was asked to expedite a detailed proposal for development of open spaces and undertake maintenance of existing parks.

He emphasised upon all the officers to ensure due adherence to the recent directions issued by the General Administration Department, wherein responsibilities of Transit Migrant Camps at Jammu and Kashmir have been assigned to various Government departments.
