KVK Kargil-I Organizes One-Day Workshop on “Management of Backyard Poultry Birds in Ladakh Conditions”

Kargil, June 25 (KIP)- Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil-I organized a one-day workshop on Backyard Poultry Farming in collaboration with the All India Coordinated Research Project on Poultry Breeding, Leh Centre, University of Ladakh. The programme was conducted to promote poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood option and an effective means of women’s empowerment in the region.

The workshop was attended by farmers, farm women, beneficiaries of the poultry project, and officials from various departments. Dr. Nassreen F. Kacho, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Kargil-I, welcomed the chief guest, participants, and beneficiaries, and highlighted the importance of poultry farming in strengthening rural livelihoods. She also delivered a lecture on the role of poultry farming in women’s empowerment and income generation.

Dr. Leela, PDO Kargil and resource person for the workshop, delivered an informative session on scientific poultry management practices and the various government schemes available for poultry farmers. She encouraged participants to avail themselves of these schemes to establish profitable backyard poultry units.

Professor F.D. Sheikh, Head, KVK Leh and Principal Investigator of the project, briefed the participants on the objectives and achievements of the project and provided technical guidance on disease prevention, health care, and feed management in poultry farming.

Dr. Nazir, Scientist, KVK Kargil-I, delivered a lecture on improved poultry production practices and emphasized the importance of scientific management in enhancing productivity and profitability.

Dr. Mansoor Hussain delivered a lecture on the roadmap for the future development of poultry farming in Kargil and stressed the need for coordinated efforts to strengthen the poultry sector in the district.

Ms. Parveen Akhtar, the chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment through poultry farming. She stated that poultry farming is a highly suitable enterprise for the terrain and climatic conditions of Kargil and can provide a reliable source of income for rural women. She appreciated the efforts of Dr. F.D. Sheikh, who travelled from Leh to conduct the programme, and requested that more such programmes be organized in the future.

A progressive farmer from Suru Valley shared his experiences in poultry farming and appreciated the efforts of KVK Kargil-I in promoting the enterprise. He expressed gratitude to the Project Investigator, Prof. F.D. Sheikh, for providing training, technical guidance, and necessary inputs under the project.

The workshop concluded with an interactive session, followed by the distribution of poultry inputs among the beneficiaries to support the establishment and expansion of backyard poultry units in the district. Dr. Kacho expressed her gratitude to Professor F.D. Sheikh for conducting the programme and distributing inputs among the beneficiaries.
