EJM College Organises One-Day Botanical Tour to Warila

Leh, September 07 (KIP)-The Department of Botany, Eliezer Joldan Memorial College (EJM College), Leh, organised a one-day botanical tour to Warila with the objective of providing students with practical exposure to the rich and diverse plant wealth of the region.
Students from the 1st, 3rd and 5th semesters participated enthusiastically in the field excursion. The tour provided an opportunity for students to study plants in their natural habitats and observe the diversity of different plant groups across varied sites and microhabitats.
A major component of the field study was the observation and collection of medicinal plants found in the region. Important medicinal plants recorded during the tour included species of Delphinium, Saussurea, Waldheimia, Leontopodium, Nepeta, Lomatogonium, Rhodiola and Urtica, among others. Students were introduced to their field identification, ecological characteristics and medicinal significance. Specimens and photographic records were also collected for academic documentation.
The students also explored algal diversity by collecting specimens from different sites and habitats. Representatives of bryophytes and ferns were observed and collected, while several mushrooms and other fungal specimens encountered during the field visit were documented. The exercise provided students with a broader understanding of both flowering and non-flowering plant groups and their distribution in different habitats.
The field activities included field observation, preliminary identification, specimen collection and photographic documentation. Students were encouraged to analyse variations in plant occurrence and distribution in relation to habitat, microhabitat and prevailing environmental conditions.
The students were accompanied and guided by Senior Assistant Professor Razia Parveen, Assistant Professor Rinchen Angmo and Mr. Aijaz, who provided academic guidance throughout the field visit and helped students relate their field observations to concepts covered in the classroom.
The one-day botanical tour served as a valuable hands-on learning experience, strengthening students’ practical knowledge of plant taxonomy, biodiversity, ecology, medicinal plants and field collection techniques.
The Department of Botany expressed its sincere appreciation to Principal Prof. Stanzin Yangdol for her continued support and encouragement, which has significantly contributed towards strengthening practical and field-oriented learning opportunities for students.
The Department of Botany intends to continue organising field-based academic activities to enhance students’ practical understanding of biodiversity and strengthen the connection between classroom learning and real-world botanical exploration.
