DUJ condemns attack on Reporter Raghav Trivedi at rally

13/05/2024

New Delhi, May 13 (KIP)-The DUJ strongly condemns the physical attack on YouTube journalist Raghav Trivedi of Molitics India on May 12, 2024 while covering Home Minister Amit Shah's election rally in Rae Bareli.
DUJ in a press statement said that the attack was reportedly provoked by Raghav's video recording of a woman who said she and others women had been promised Rs 100 by her village Pradhan for attending the rally.

Payment for attending rallies is a common, though unfortunate, practice that political parties and candidates often resort to in order to gather a crowd. Reporting such a practice should not have provoked an attack. The reporter alleges the police did not prevent the beating. He had to be taken to hospital as he was injured. There is video evidence of him being surrounded and heckled.

The Delhi Union of Journalists demands that those who attacked the reporter be punished. We also demand that the inability of the police to protect the reporter be inquired into.

Lastly, the DUJ reiterates it's demand for a law for the protection of journalists, compensation for damage to their equipment and adequate punishment of those who attack mediapersons.
