Srinagar, April 17 (KIP)-President of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Front and former Cabinet Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Friday welcomed the launch of the 100-day “Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir” campaign announced by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, terming it a much-needed and timely initiative to combat the growing menace of drug abuse in the Union Territory.

Addressing the various delegations at party headquarters in Srinagar, Hakeem said the firm resolve expressed by the administration to take strict action against drug smugglers, including punitive measures such as cancellation of passports, Aadhaar cards, and attachment of properties, sends a strong message that those involved in ruining the future of youth will not be spared at any cost.

He said such decisive steps are essential to dismantle the network of drug trafficking and protect society from its devastating impact.

While appreciating the government’s commitment, Hakeem emphasized that the fight against drug abuse cannot be won by the administration alone. He stressed the need for a collective societal effort, calling upon civil society members, parents, teachers, and community leaders to actively participate in this campaign.

He particularly highlighted the important role of schools, colleges, and religious institutions, stating that Imams and scholars can play a vital role in spreading awareness and guiding youth away from substance abuse.

Hakeem further said that awareness must be complemented with sustained engagement at the grassroots level.

He urged educational institutions to organize regular counseling sessions, awareness drives, and youth-centric activities to keep students informed and motivated. He also underlined the importance of community vigilance in identifying and reporting suspicious activities related to drug peddling.

Raising concern over the supply chain of narcotics, Hakeem said that law enforcement agencies must thoroughly investigate the roots of drug trafficking, identify the main sources, and take stringent action to break the nexus.

“Unless the origin and networks behind these drugs are exposed and dismantled, the problem will persist,” he added.

Hakeem also stressed that unemployment among youth is one of the contributing factors driving them towards drug abuse.

In this regard, he urged the administration to introduce an employment-based support system, including a special unemployment allowance (employment bata), to provide financial security and meaningful engagement to young people.

He expressed hope that with a comprehensive and inclusive approach involving strict enforcement, awareness, rehabilitation, and economic support, Jammu and Kashmir can move towards becoming a drug-free society.
