Police destroy illicit poppy cultivation across Baramulla, Handwara & Shopian

Srinagar, May 01 (KIP)- In a major and coordinated offensive against the drug menace, Police in Baramulla, Handwara and Shopian districts intensified their crackdown on illicit poppy cultivation, destroying illegal crops and initiating legal action in multiple cases.

In Baramulla, acting on credible information, police uncovered illegal poppy cultivation in the Pinjoora area on land belonging to Bashir Ahmad Malik. Following due legal procedures, FIR No. 53/2026 was registered. The illicit crop was destroyed on the spot in the presence of a Magistrate along with officials from the Excise, Revenue and Agriculture Departments, and samples were collected and seized for investigation.

In Handwara, a swift operation under the Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan was carried out in the Pohrupeth area of Chogul. A joint team of Police, Revenue, Excise and Agriculture officials raided land owned by Jehangir Ahmad Dar, where illegal poppy cultivation was detected. The crop was immediately destroyed in the presence of a Magistrate, and samples were sealed. FIR No. 86/2026 has been registered at Police Station Handwara, and further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, in Shopian, Police continued their sustained drive against narcotics cultivation in the Sindoo Shirmal area. A team from Police Post Keegam found illicit poppy cultivation on land belonging to Khazir Mohd Bhat. The crop was promptly destroyed, and FIR No. 74/2026 has been registered at Police Station Shopian under relevant sections of law, with further investigation taken up.

These actions underline the strong and consistent zero-tolerance approach of the police against drug-related offences. J&K Police reiterated their commitment to eradicating the drug menace and urged the public to remain vigilant and share any information related to drug trafficking or illegal cultivation to help build a drug-free society.

Police registers 153 NDPS cases, arrests 147 accused during last 4 months in Anantnag; Above 372 Kgs of contraband seized, Properties worth ₹3.70 crore acted upon

May 01: Srinagar, Jammu, May 01 (Scoop News)- Police in Anantnag, in its continued drive against drug trafficking and substance abuse, has carried out an intensified crackdown on drug mafia during the first four months of 2026, yielding significant results across the district.

During this period, 153 cases under the NDPS Act were registered, leading to the arrest of 147 accused persons involved in drug-related offences.

In multiple operations, police recovered substantial quantities of contraband including 170.995 kgs of cannabis powder, 185.001 kgs of ganja, 1.515 kgs of charas, 14.574 kgs of poppy straw, 160 grams of brown sugar, 38 grams of heroin, and 750 intoxicant tablets. The total estimated market value of the seized contraband is approximately ₹48,20,613.

As part of its proactive measures, Anantnag Police also destroyed illegal narcotic crop cultivation spread over approximately 190 marlas of land, thereby curbing the supply at its source.

In addition, 21 vehicles were seized in connection with drug trafficking cases, while 10 Registration Certificates (RCs) and 09 Driving Licenses were cancelled as part of legal action.

Further intensifying its action against the financial networks of drug peddlers, properties worth approximately ₹3.70 crore were attached, including 05 residential houses and 03 vehicles.

Moreover, three illegally constructed restaurants worth crores belonging to drug peddlers were demolished on NHW-44 by Anantnag Police.
