J&K Police Destroys Illegal Poppy Cultivation In Anantnag, Shopian

Srinagar, May 02 (KIP)- In a major and coordinated offensive against the drug menace, Police in Anantnag and Shopian districts intensified their crackdown on illicit poppy cultivation, destroying illegal crops and initiating legal action in multiple cases.

In Anantang, In the first instance, information regarding illegal poppy cultivation at Village Sofi Pora was received. Accordingly, FIR No. 31/2026 under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Pahalgam. A police team led by SI Farooq Ahmad, along with accompanying officers, reached the spot and initiated legal proceedings. The process included identification of the crop by an Agriculture expert, demarcation of the land by the concerned Patwari, collection of samples, and destruction of the illicit cultivation. As per revenue records, the area under illegal cultivation was approximately 4 marlas. Similarly, acting on specific information from the Beat Incharge, illegal poppy cultivation was detected on land belonging to Farooq Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Rashid Mir, resident of Sheikhgund. A olice team promptly reached the location and destroyed the cultivation on the spot. In this connection, FIR No. 44/2026 under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Uttrasoo, and further investigation is underway.

In Shopian, Police in coordination with the Executive Magistrate carried out a special drive against wild cannabis in village Shadab Karewa. During the operation, teams successfully identified and destroyed wild cannabis plants spread over approximately 30 marlas of land at two different locations in the said village. The illegal cultivation was eradicated on the spot to prevent its misuse for narcotic purposes. The action reflects the firm commitment of Shopian Police and the district administration towards eliminating the drug menace at its roots by targeting cultivation and supply chains. Such proactive measures are being undertaken regularly to ensure a drug-free environment in the district.
