Kargil, June 20 (KIP)- On the directions of the UT Administration Order No. 47 of 2026 dated 19.06.2026 issued by the Department of Forest, Ecology & Environment, UT Ladakh, and with a view to enforcing the ban on identified Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items, a market inspection and awareness drive was conducted by the Municipal Committee Kargil.
During the drive, owners of vegetable shops, general stores, wholesalers, and other commercial establishments were sensitized about the adverse environmental impacts of Single-Use Plastic (SUP) and the provisions of the ban.
The Municipal Committee Kargil informed all stakeholders, including shopkeepers, vendors, wholesalers, retailers, and commercial establishments, that the use, sale, storage, stocking, distribution, transportation, and supply of all identified banned Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items shall be strictly prohibited throughout Kargil District with immediate effect.
Further, any person or entity, including individuals, shopkeepers, vendors, commercial establishments, institutions, wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers, or distributors, found using, storing, stocking, selling, supplying, distributing, or transporting banned Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items shall be liable for the imposition of penalties/fines which may extend up to Rs 10,000.
Furthermore, it was also informed that Littering of waste shall be strictly prohibited on public places, tourist destinations and other high footfall locations throughout the Kargil district. A Penalty/fine upto Rs 5,000 may be imposed on any person found littering.
The general public is requested to cooperate with the authorities and adopt environmentally sustainable alternatives in order to ensure effective implementation of the ban on SUP and littering.
