Kheer Bhawani Mela: A Pilgrimage of Faith, Memory, and Civilizational Resolve

The annual Kheer Bhawani Mela, observed on the sacred occasion of Jyestha Ashtami, is far more than a religious festival for Kashmiri Pandits. It is a profound pilgrimage of faith, remembrance, identity, and collective determination.
Every year, thousands of exiled Kashmiri Pandits undertake the arduous journey to the holy shrines of Mata Ragnya Bhagwati, especially at Tulmulla, carrying with them not only prayers but also the pain of displacement, the memory of lost homes, and an unwavering attachment to their ancestral homeland. For a community uprooted from Kashmir, participation in the Yatra is an act of spiritual reaffirmation and civilizational continuity.
The pilgrimage embodies the enduring bond between the displaced community and the sacred land of Kashmir. It is a reminder that exile may separate people from their homes, but it cannot sever their roots, faith, or historical consciousness. Every offering at the shrine carries the silent anguish of exile and the enduring hope of return with dignity, security, and justice.
The Kheer Bhawani Yatra is therefore not merely an act of devotion; it is a solemn pledge to preserve memory, resist erasure, and uphold the truth of history. It calls upon every devotee to honour the sacrifices of previous generations, safeguard Kashmiri Hindu heritage, and work towards the reclamation and restoration of their civilizational presence in Kashmir.
The ideals articulated by Panun Kashmir remain central to this commitment: the pursuit of justice, the protection of identity, constitutional safeguards, and the realization of a secure and dignified homeland for the indigenous Kashmiri Hindu community. Equally important is the principle of non-refoulement—the moral and legal commitment that no displaced person should be compelled to return to conditions that compromise safety, dignity, or fundamental rights.
Jyestha Ashtami is thus not merely a celebration. It is a moment of collective introspection, remembrance, and resolve. It reminds the community that truth must not be forgotten, memory must not be surrendered, and the struggle for justice, security, and cultural survival must continue with courage, dignity, and unwavering faith.
Jai Mata Kheer Bhawani.
Jai Mata Ragnya Bhagwati.
ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं रां क्लीं सौः भगवत्यै महाराज्ञयै नम:
