Jammu/Srinagar, July 03 (KIP)-The nation pays solemn tribute to Brigadier Mohammad Usman, the legendary "Lion of Nowshera" and recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, on his martyrdom anniversary today. The Indian Army honors his supreme sacrifice during the 1947-48 war in Jammu and Kashmir, where his valor saved the strategic regions of Nowshera and Jhangar.Known for his inspiring leadership, strict discipline, and deep compassion for his troops, Brigadier Usman made the ultimate sacrifice on July 3, 1948, when he was struck by an enemy artillery shell just days before his 36th birthday. His last stirring words—“I am dying, but don't let the land we were fighting for fall into enemy hands”—remain a guiding legacy for the Indian Armed Forces. In honor of his heroism and to commemorate the recapture of Jhangar, the Indian Army observes July 3 as Jhangar Day.
