Mehbooba Mufti Visits Flash Flood-Hit Families in Beerwah
Seeks Immediate Rehabilitation and Permanent Relief Measure

Beerwah, Budgam July 29 (KIP)-JKPDP President Ms. Mehbooba Mufti today visited the families affected by the recent flash floods in Beerwah, Budgam, and expressed deep anguish over the widespread destruction caused by the overflowing of the Sukhnag Nallah. Accompanied by Party party senior leaders and constituecy incharge , Ms. Mufti met the affected shopkeepers and residents, listened to their grievances and assured them that their pain and suffering would not go unheard.
The devastating flash floods washed away the Municipal Shopping Complex near the Beerwah Bus Stand, destroying around two dozen shops and leaving scores of families without a source of livelihood. What many had built over decades vanished within minutes, reducing years of hard work, savings and dreams to rubble.
Interacting with the affected families, Ms. Mufti said that the tragedy is not merely about damaged structures but about shattered lives, uncertain futures and families struggling to recover from an unimaginable loss. She said that many traders have lost everything they owned and now stand at the crossroads of survival with little hope unless the government intervenes decisively.
She urged the government to immediately make available the vacant Municipal Building in Beerwah to the affected shopkeepers on a temporary basis so that whatever merchandise and belongings they have managed to salvage can be safely stored and protected from further damage.
Ms. Mufti further demanded that the administration identify suitable land at the earliest for the rehabilitation of the affected traders and facilitate the construction of a new commercial complex so that they can restart their businesses and rebuild their lives with dignity. She also called for adequate compensation and a comprehensive rehabilitation package to ensure that no affected family is left to fend for itself.
“The responsibility of a government does not end with damage assessments and official visits. It begins with restoring hope to those who have lost everything. These families do not seek sympathy alone. They deserve timely rehabilitation, financial support and the assurance that they will not be abandoned in their darkest hour,” Ms. Mufti said.
She also stressed the urgent need for strengthening flood protection infrastructure along the Sukhnag Nallah and adopting long-term disaster mitigation measures to prevent the recurrence of such devastation, stating that recurring tragedies expose serious gaps in preparedness and infrastructure.
Reaffirming the People’s Democratic Party’s commitment to stand with the people during every hardship, Ms. Mufti assured the affected families that the party would continue to raise their concerns at every appropriate forum until justice, relief and rehabilitation are delivered.
