APSCC stresses to recognize contributions and sacrifices of lesser-known freedom fighters

Srinagar, August 13 (KIP)-All Party Sikh Coordination Committee's (APSCC) chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina on Thursday stressed the need to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of lesser-known freedom fighters who played a significant role in India’s struggle for independence.
Addressing a press conference, Raina said the history of the freedom movement should not be limited to a few prominent leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, while the contributions of numerous other freedom fighters remain largely unrecognised among the common people.
He specifically mentioned revolutionaries such as Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh, Abid Hussain Safrani(Jai Hind Movement), Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, M.Ali Johar(Khilafat Movement) and Rajguru, saying they made significant contributions to the country’s freedom struggle. He also referred to the Ghadar Movement and the role of revolutionaries such as Kartar Singh Saraba in challenging British rule.
Raina also highlighted the contribution of women leaders, including Sarojini Naidu, in mobilising women and strengthening the freedom movement.
He said Independence means having the freedom to live, study, work and participate in the democratic process, including electing Parliament, legislative assemblies and governments.
“Today, our youth are celebrating Independence Day, but they must also understand what freedom means and the sacrifices made to achieve it,” Raina said.
He urged the younger generation to study the history of India’s freedom struggle and learn about the hardships faced by those who fought against British rule.
Raina stressed that the freedom movement should not be attributed to any single community, saying people from different sections, including Muslims and Sikhs, made significant sacrifices for the country.
He called for the contributions of grassroots-level freedom fighters from different parts of India to be properly documented and highlighted so that future generations can learn about their role in the independence movement.
Raina said the nation remains indebted to all those who sacrificed their lives and contributed to securing India’s freedom.
